NMACD RECOGNITION
CONGRATULATIONS
NMACD's 2025 Outstanding SWCD
Southwest Quay Soil and Water Conservation District
This year's honoree put producers first, kept water at the heart of the work, and made outreach
as easy as a text--literally. They showed that when you plan smart, partner strong, and prioritize people,
YOU can make conservation contagious.

(Left to right) Brenda Allen, previous District Manager; representing Southwest Quay, LaKenley Young, Tech. Ass't.; Jovani Armendariz, Vice Chair; Kandy Hutchins, Supervisor; Lynnae Abarca, District Manager
Outstanding Friends of Conservation Award
Since 1999, Spur Ranch has been a proving ground for conservation practices that actually work:
Erosion control, controlled burns, forest management, and innovative grazing strategies. His ranch doesn’t just raise cattle—it raises the bar for land stewardship in New Mexico.
CONGRATULATIONS, Tom W. Paterson and the Spur Ranch!

What makes Tom truly stand out is that he doesn’t just talk—he does. He inspires others to get involved, he leads by example, and he still manages to keep things light, even in tough moments. He’s proof that you can take conservation seriously without taking yourself too seriously. During the 60-day legislative session, he was front and center, pushing for water conservation grants, food security, fire recovery programs—projects that matter for the future of New Mexico.
JENNIE CLEMMONS AND THE
RUNNING N CATTLE COMPANY
Nominated by Border Soil and Water Conservation District for the
OUTSTANDING LAND STEWARDSHIP AWARD
MATT WISEMAN
OUTSTANDING CONSERVATIONIST AWARD
Nominated by Deming SWCD
CONGRATULATIONS, MATT!!
Outstanding Land Stewardship Award
and Outstanding Conservationist Award

Accepting on behalf of the Running N Cattle Company are Rosemary Thomas, Border SWCD Supervisor, and Deena Kinman, District Manager: This family legacy dating back to 1906 near Kenna is proof that good stories and good grass can both run in the family. Aross their ranches in Yeso, Kenna, and Caprock, Jenny and her team make conservation practical and productive. It's always water first, and brush control is a full-time hobby. Their rotational, prescribed grazing lets pastures rest and soils hold more moisture. Jennie served as a Border SWCD Supervisor from 2015 to 2023.

Retired recently from NRCS, Matt continues to volunteer in many ways. Education has always been part of his mission. He’s volunteered in classrooms, with 4-H, and at community events—helping young people learn that dirt is what you sweep off the porch; soil is what grows supper. As President of the New Mexico Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society, he helped bring the Society’s international meeting to Albuquerque and put New Mexico’s conservation work on a bigger stage. In short, Matt turns conversations into conservation—tailgate talks into better water, healthier grass, and stronger operations. He’s proof that the best plans are built with neighbors, gumption, and a good map.
