Local Work Group Training

With the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, Congress has updated the Title II Conservation Provisions and authorized funding for USDA to implement the provisions for the next five years.  Estimated USDA Farm Bill funding to New Mexico is forty million dollars for each of the five years of the 2018 Farm Bill.  Providing input to USDA in the implementation of the programs in New Mexico at the state and local level is especially important in the first year of the 2018 Farm Bill.  This input can be provided by New Mexico conservation organizations, i.e., Soil and Water Conservation Districts, and landowners through the processes established in the Farm Bill.  The State Technical Committee is established in the Farm Bill for USDA to obtain input and advice from state-wide organizations on state-wide Farm Bill Program implementation.  The Local Work Group process is established in the Farm Bill for USDA to obtain input and advice from local organizations within the state.  Recommendations and concerns provided by the Local Work Groups will be  a valuable resource for local and statewide implementation of Farm Bill Programs in New Mexico.

Under a grant awarded NMACD by the Thornburg Foundation, we partnered with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and conducted training seminars with one held in each of the six NMACD regions (Cuba, Hernandez, TorC--Elephant Butte, Las Vegas, Clovis and  Artesia).  The purpose of these seminars has been to inform conservation organizations and landowners of the 2018 Farm Bill Title II Conservation Provisions and how to provide input at the state and local level on implementation.  Information was also given on recent bills passed by the NM State Legislature.  In addition, three public seminars are planned to be held in Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Las Cruces to provide further information regarding the USDA Farm Bill Programs and opportunities for them to participate in Farm Bill Programs.  Dates have not yet been set for the three public meetings.

The materials used in the first six training seminars is provided below.  Just click on the file you wish to view or print.
